River Rats - a new UAC record!

Posted by shannon on Sun, 08/02/2009 - 11:43pm

Two years ago the guys from Standard Tire hosted a bachelor party on the Kaw with Up a Creek. After that experience we thought no other float could be quite that rowdy. Last weekend the Standard Tire guys, along with some of the crew from Ace Steering came back and proved us wrong.

Who would have thought you could actually stretch a 6.5 mile float into 8+ hours of river?!? How do you do this, you ask? You strap half a dozen canoes together for one massive party barge, and you stop at every single shred of sand on the river for a sandbar break! Come back again, guys, and we'll see if we can set another mile-to-hour record!

Sibling Rivalry

Joanie contacted UAC a month ago asking for help in getting all of her siblings together for a little adventure. After the name "Sibling Rivalry" was adopted, we thought it best to put these people on the water without us! ...Actually, schedules just didn't mesh perfectly so they floated the Delaware and Kaw without any UAC accompaniment, but we did send them along with the camera so we have digital proof that they didn't kill each other on the water!

And what float would be complete without the post-paddle martinis at Uncle Ron's place? This group was not about to be an exception to that rule. Can't wait until they all come back for another round!

Washburn U meets UAC

Posted by shannon on Wed, 07/29/2009 - 11:32pm

The Outdoor Activities class at Washburn University was looking for a group activity to close out their summer semester when they stumbled across Up a Creek and of course, had to look no further. And while we did immensely enjoy paddling with the Washburn folks, I have to say they did push the limits of UAC's morning routine -- 7:30am start time? Seriously?

Nonetheless, we all had a great time, despite the lost paddle and broken skeg!

AAFP Float

Posted by shannon on Sat, 07/25/2009 - 11:27pm

A couple of my coworkers from AAFP joined Up a Creek on July 25th for a lazy Saturday float down the Delaware and Kansas Rivers. While the kids were anxious for a sandbar (of which there are none on the Delaware), the adults took their time, stretching out the day.

Eventually, we hit the Kansas River and found one of the only sandbars that wasn't soaked through with the recent rainfall. It served as our lunch area and a good swimming hole for the little ones.

Too wet to camp...

Posted by shannon on Mon, 07/13/2009 - 12:28am

UAC's sandbar campout was scheduled for July 11, but recent rains have turned our reliable sandbars into mudbars, which are not very camp-friendly. So the campout was canceled, but the float continued. We put in at Rising Sun at 11:30am and floated to Riverfront Park in Lawrence. Fortunately, the sandbars proved to be a bonus for some of the kids who came along. Check the photos for examples of this.

First full moon float

Posted by shannon on Thu, 07/09/2009 - 12:27am

Up a Creek held it's first full moon float this month, and the turnout was great! From 9pm to 1:30am we floated the Delaware River, then on to the Kaw for a brief sandbar break complete with fireworks, then off to Rising Sun boat ramp where we called it a night. No doubt, this will be a repeat event.

Sunset at Clinton Lake

Posted by shannon on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:25am

On July 1, Craig and I were planning a small evening session on the lake. Word got to Bear, then Aurora. By sunset, we had a small crew of paddlers that joined us for a few hours on Clinton Lake on a beautiful clear evening.

Greene River

Posted by shannon on Sat, 06/27/2009 - 12:23am

Every float with UAC brings something new. The Greene River float brought us a new diving hole - a tree that grew horizontally across Wild Horse Creek about 15 feet above the water. A nice jump into a cool creek on a hot sunny day was just what the doctor ordered for Alicia Greene and friends.

Kicking off summer

Posted by shannon on Sun, 06/21/2009 - 9:05pm

June 21st is officially the first day of summer and we couldn't spend it anywhere but on the river. Joined by some old friends and some new ones, we hit the Delaware River and floated down to the Kaw, somehow stretching a < 5 mile float into a full six hours.

Check out the photos from today - they tell a story... sometimes they tell too vivid a story, depending on your imagination.

Scouting... unofficially, that is

Posted by shannon on Sun, 06/21/2009 - 9:00pm

On Saturday, Travis and his group of scouts (and some family member as well) joined UAC for a float down the Kansas River from Perry to Lawrence. This float was anything but ordinary. With overcast skies, the day got off to an interesting start and only got more interesting as the day progressed. Boats went over about a half dozen times, sandbars turned out to be huge mud pits, and we paddled the last 90 minutes through rain. Yet somehow, this group seemed to have a blast.

Check out the pics from this memorable float!
